Jess has forever been fascinated by dogs. It’s not about petting them or being close to them. It’s just hearing about them, or ‘seeing’ them from a safe distance. For several years now, followers on Instagram and Facebook have often heard Jess talk about dogs. They have even heard her bark like a dog as she describes how she wants her future dog to sound. The one she’s pre-planning to take Abby’s place when Abby dies. Jess also loves hearing about dogs. So, a friend from across the pond sent us pictures of her dog named Whiskey.
Although Jess is blind, she LOVES looking at dog pictures. She can visually discriminate that there is an object (dog) in the photos even though she doesn’t see the details. Big black dogs with loud barks are her favorites. In this video, I am describing the pictures of the lovely dog named Whiskey. Whiskey is a Newfoundland/Lab/Bernese mix and is 8-years-old.
Whiskey’s mom tells me that where her family lives, Whiskey is very well-known as the swimming dog, and people always stop and admire her when she walks along with her frisbee in her mouth! “She has a very loud bark and loves to swim in the sea and catch frisbees! Whiskey barks when she hears something outside the house..if she hears a car or a knock at the door she barks very loudly until she knows there is nothing to worry about. She really barks loud when the postman comes in the mornings. She likes to protect us too, so she will bark at people she doesn’t know until they give her lots of fuss!” Whiskey has a special harness she wears that says ‘autism dog’ and is able to go to some places with the family. Her favourite trick is to give a ‘high five’ when asked.
