Jess on Rollerblades

BLIND ROLLERBLADING

December 2004

Since Jessica started at the school for the blind in January, December marked a full year since she had started there. On the home front, Jess had asked for rollerblades for Christmas. So, yes, she got some. She got a lot of help and guidance from her sister, who was nearing twelve years old and had caught up to Jess in height.

And yes, she got a new baby (even though…). She wanted a boy this time.

Jessica’s favorite thing in the world is listening to music, and randomly busting out with bits of the lyrics. Before she came home from school for Christmas break, I was excited to get invited to go watch the Christmas program at the school. My mom and sister and her children went also.

Can you spot Jess? She’s the only one in a white turtle neck. I could tell that she was participating in the singing by the bobbing of her head to the music and every now and then I can see her singing. She did a good job of staying in her place and standing still.

It was really great having Jess home for an extended visit for the holiday. After Christmas, she headed back for the next semester.

That video with 12-year-old Hannah brought a huge lump to my throat. Her guidance, patience, sweetness, encouragement, and happiness for Jessica is so apparent in that short video. Those very same qualities still exemplify who Hannah is. What a treasure she is!

In so many of the pictures and videos that I review, I see those same qualities in Hannah over and over again. She is most definitely a precious gift!
