A Trip To McKamey Animal Shelter

Jess is autistic and blind. She loves to visit dogs at the animal shelter. Listening to the dogs bark is her favorite thing. Although she has always been fascinated by dogs, she is also scared of them.

At one point in the video, you can see her nearly hugging the wall while her caregiver is encouraging her to pet the dog that is in the room. You will also see that she is afraid to get close enough to the kennels to push a dog biscuit through.

At home Jess has a personal dog that she carefully chose from a shelter in 2010. Jess did an amazing job with her selection and was able to overcome her fear of Abby in a matter of a few days. Abby has been a wonderful dog and is now 11-years-old.

Jess has personal caregivers that take her out during the week for community experiences such as this one.
