Welcome! I am Val. My adult daughter Jess and I live together and have a loving and fun relationship. We share our daily adventures, travels, struggles, and the strong loving village that surrounds us.
October Recap
Hello #goodonesfam ? I hope you had a fun and safe Happy Halloween! Jess, baddaddy, and I wrapped up our October with a magical trip to Walt Disney World. We had a blast at Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. Riding rollercoasters like Expedition Everest, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Thunder Mountain Railroad, and other fast rides with Jess was so much fun! Pics and videos of our trip can be found on Instagram.
The Trauma of Broken Trust
This month, I touched on the very sensitive topic of abuse at the hands of those we trust to care for our children. Jess is forever traumatized by her experiences at a semi-residential school when she was 16. She still has anxiety and nightmares about it. Once that trust is broken, it is so hard to extend that trust to anyone else. In the video we made about this, Jess expresses her feelings and the pain can be seen, felt, and heard. Read and watch HERE.The End of Pool Days
Finally, the summer season pool days came to an end on October 11! I was quite ready for this. Some people asked what we would do as replacement motivator about picking. The answer is, I haven’t figured it out yet and unfortunately the picking continues.

Trying New Foods
October has been the month for trying new foods. Jess willingly tried a fresh banana slice, a hamburger, and dipping bread in oil. The banana was the most difficult one. She has eaten bananas in banana pudding before. However, just straight plain banana was hard for her because the texture was a real struggle.
With fast food, Jess always orders chicken nuggets. To encourage variety and flexibility, I told Jess we would eat out if she would agree to a hamburger instead of chicken. Voila! She ate a Burger King hamburger!
The dipping bread was from Carrabba’s. It took lots of sniffing, but she took a bite and went back for more. I’m so proud of her for her willingness to try things.
Cooking with Nonnie
We have officially started recording our Cooking with Nonnie segments and have two ready to edit. The first will be published this week, hopefully. ??
Mourning
Jess continues to mourn the loss of Granny. Not a day goes by that she doesn’t tell me that she misses Granny. She also keeps asking questions like, “What does Kidney Failure mean?” and “Who told Granny she was going to heaven?” I have explained to Jess that she will keep missing her for a very long time.

COMMUNITY CONVOS
Per her wonderful suggestion, Saskia and I have been working on sharing 30 days of Bragitude. Doing this has been such a great exercise in taking the time to reflect on the things I am thankful for, as well as give myself credit for personal accomplishments whether big or small.

Hello,
I have a fourteen old son on the spectrum and he is terrified of needles. Did Jess have this fear and if so, how did you handle it. Also, which supplements does Jess take?
Thank you.
Lori
Lori,
Jess is not afraid of needles specifically. Because of her vision impairment, she has never seen one. However, if we are going for lab work, I try to avoid talking about it too soon, then once she knows it’s happening I try to reassure her that she has done it before and it wasn’t too bad. Last time, she did pretty good.
Jessica takes Vit D, B12, Fish Oil.
