THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR AUTISTIC INTERPRETATIONS®
Welcome! I am Val. My adult daughter Jess and I live together and have a loving and fun relationship. We share our daily adventures, travels, struggles, and the strong loving village that surrounds us.
1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 15. It sounds like a secret code! Before we get any further into September, let’s have a look, by the numbers, at the eighth month of 2021.
HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED IN AUGUST
After an extended break, Jessica and Nonnie were back in the kitchen for an episode of Cooking with Nonnie. If cooking is your thing, we have a whole YouTube playlist dedicated to that, and, Nonnie is working on publishing a cookbook.
In August, I published two Q&A bideos on YouTube. I very much enjoy creating these because while our goal is to share a life of joy, I also hope it brings awareness and understanding into life with a medically complex person. Our social media journey actually started as written blogs. My Adjusting Expectations blog entry talks about the complexity of Jessica’s diagnoses and included links to Vocational Training and her volunteer stint at a nursing home. Writing is still a passion of mine and it’s in my plans to get writing back into my routine.
For August’s Q&A, I spoke about Jessica’s transition out of school. I shared about Jessica getting fired from vocational training and our subsequent attempt to tap into Jessica’s caregiving inclinations. I hope to encourage parents or caregivers in addition to sharing a bit more of a behind the scenes look at how we got to where we are.
I have a long list of ideas for Q&A, but if you have suggestions, please let me know!
Three poodles?! She just don’t need it. In August we celebrated Zoë’s gotcha day. Zoë has brought more joy than we could have imagined, and Daryl too is a (very) big bundle of joy. If you missed it, check out one of my new favorite photos of Hannah. The shenanigans between Daryl and Zoë have been fun to watch. Less fun is Daryl’s howling when Hannah leaves for work, but it’s getting better and we are all settling into our new routines. Manners are on the agenda as #BadDaddy has been working with Zoë and Daryl on leashed walks.
Marlow caught the poodle bug and in August we added to the poodle pack when we helped Marlow pick up Benny. Benny fits right into our oodles of poodles. The three poodles share a dad and all have great personalities in different sized bodies! Daryl is the giant and Miss Zozo is the petite lady. It looks like Benny will come in the middle, but he has a confident personality that just might outsize Daryl!
And yes, we still have Abby. Abby has old dog syndrome and has really slowed down. She struggles to go up and down stairs and is no longer keen on walks. She sleeps a lot but rest assured she gets plenty of loving!
We surprised Jess with a 4-night trip to Disney World. Wasn’t her reaction precious? We make it work by having an annual pass, splitting a hotel, and being careful with meal planning. (Soon, I’ll be sharing more about how we financially manage our Disney Trips.) This was a more relaxed pace than our last trip, but of course we still got lots of rides in like Expedition Everest and Goofy’s Barnstormer. And, if you didn’t see the bideos, we have two new Jess catch phrases: “stay where you are at!” and “Dad, stay seated!”.
I took the plunge and finally created some Instagram reels, nine in August, to be exact. In addition to highlighting some shorter bideos, I’m finding my inner DJ by creating some musical features. August included two musical features (You Make Me Happy, and Hair), some oldies but goodies like Jess’ infectious laughter, and of course some Disney rollercoasters.
If you have any theme or music suggestions let me know!
While we certainly measure life by the quality, not the quantity, of relationships, we enjoy welcoming new followers. For Jessica’s birthday in July, I had a fun target of 15,000 YouTube subscribers. We didn’t quite make that in July, but in August we passed 15k.
Social media started for me as a way to supplement my blog and has really become much more. The encouragement we receive from you all is a blessing and so are the friendships we have made. We are so glad to welcome you to our extended goodones family. I am proud of the community we have created and the kindness and support we show to each other.
